Our third port of call was Ketchikan. When we first boarded the ship, we were disapointed to learn that our Ketchican excursion, "Off Road Jeep Safari," had been cancelled, so we went booked a jet boat trip into the Misty Fjords. Since the ship couldn't moor at the pier, we were picked up by the jet boat at a fold out dock that is built into the side of the ship. Also, since we never landed on the pier, we were not accosted by a man in a moose suit (part of the cruise photography staff) with whom we would have been obliged to take a picture. While touring Misty Fjords, we saw several bald eagles, porpoises, sea lions, and a bear. We also saw more intersting geology such as volcanic plugs and "recent" glacial scarring (in geologic time).
We had a chance to wander around Ketchikan where we met a huge golden retriever named Roscoe in one of the gift shops. This made us homesick for Emma and Blue, our border collies.
On our way back to the ship, we had to take one of three tenders that picked us up a the pier and dropped us off a the fold out dock in the ship's side. These tenders also double as life boats for the ship.
